Brave Blues

April snow showers 2011

I couldn’t help myself.  I raked.  I raked off the leaves and crud from the flower bed next to my studio and what’s in the forecast?  Snow.  Cold.  Unspringness.  This truly has been a snowy winter.  I was compelled to see more of the luscious magnifient brilliant indigo blue plant called  Scilla siberica  or Spring Beauty peeking through my crunchy brown studio flower bed.  I wanted desperately to see more–more color, more life, more hope! So I raked.

The next morning I did awake to a April winter wonderland.  I quickly scurried downstairs and peeked out my studio window to view how the tiny magical patches of Spring Beauty survived.  The brave flowers were as magnificent as ever–even a little more beautiful in contrast with the wet white snow.  It inspired me to take some photos of our yard and the transformation that will take place with and without me this growing season. It was meditative walking around our yard documenting this snow shower on  April 20th, 2011.  The world outside my door was so quiet that I could hear the snowflakes hitting my camera and ski jacket.  The only thing that broke the silence was an occasional car traveling the wet road across our swamp or the valiant song of the two cardinals who live with us. How can the simple sound of this bird suddenly fill me with such a sense of peace and contentment?  What gifts we have in our own backyard.  Snow or sun–it’s all good.

Zinnia World: Promises in a Packet

I was visiting The Home Depot the other day looking for supplies for my plant art and had to mosey into the Home and Garden area. My heart started to beat faster as I looked at the colorful planters and parade of seeds packets.   I calmed myself down by buying some flower and vegetables seeds.   Our family loves zinnias.  I think its because these annuals come in such an array of colors and have sturdy stalks for putting together great summer time arrangements all over our house.  Zinnias are easy to grow from seed and have nicely shaped leaves that cute little tree frogs love to live in.  I was a little sad for the  poor potted plants that are mature and ready for planting now because we are definitely not ready for them.  I think it’s going to be a zinnia summer at our house–that’s the sun in my house today.

Art on a Stick: a garden treat

Jewelry for plants

Still plenty of snow around but I got my green by visiting Thomsens Greenhouses yesterday.  AHHHHH is all I can say.  I was surrounded by color and life and warmth from the plants and the people.  I’m also making some garden art of my own that I’m calling “art on a stick”. These are original pieces of art made out of clay and  outdoor weatherproof materials that add a little height , texture and soul to your window boxes , patio containers, and gardens.  As is my usual style they are a bit whimsical in subject matter–dancing houses, fairy spirits, cat angels, and chickens.  I’ve had a request for flying pigs and frogs too.  These are great treats for this time of year because it’s still too cold to dig around in the gardens but it’s something you can physically and mentally hold onto as you wait for real spring weather. In fact hold onto the stick and rub your hand up and down it seven times repeating these words-” I want to be warm.  I want to be warm. I want to be warm.”   The friction from your hand on the metal will make your wish come true or else the embarrassment from actually doing it may cause a flush.

Summer Garden Tour. . . look out!

The sun has been spending a little more time this week melting the snow at our house.  A rusty garden trowel left over from fall’s last minute plantings appeared the other day along with a forgotten beverage glass.  We’re not sure what creature wintered itself inside it, but the glass will be recycled not reshelved.  Another find was the long green garden hose which will now allow water to flow from several different directions.  It offered its life to the snowblower for the rebirth of our front flowerbeds which we reworked last fall with newly planted 95% off discounted Charlie Brown shrubs , perennials, and lots of grass seed.  So far all we see from the fruits of our labor is a gully of black dirt and newly scattered granite chips from our driveway again thanks to our snow blower.

The dream is that by July 15th , 2011 this yard will be transformed into a magical treasure map of flowers, art, and alpacas.  Our home is one of nine to be featured on the 15th Annual Thomsens Greenhouse Summer Garden Tour sponsored by Avon Area Arts Alliance.  Being a part of this celebration of summer and gardening is definitely going to satisfy my creative demons.  However, my family is afraid of becoming the sacrificial lambs.  Yes, I indeed have my vision and my lists.  My personal goal will be to have beauty, fun, and a family that still loves me after July 15th.  I am a creative sporadic think outside the box gardener.  I plant purple beans in my vegetable garden every year and never eat them.  I really don’t know why but this really does happen every year. I plant eggplant and swiss chard with my flowers because they’re pretty.  I use weird old stuff (furniture, farm machinery, bowling balls) , handmade window boxes and trellises  and original art in our sometimes fertilized and watered gardens.  I love a beautiful garden but I am resourceful (code word for cheap).  I work hard but I quit when it’s not fun anymore (code word for a little lazy).  Check out my blog weekly to watch the transformation of an artist’s home and garden from spring mess to summer success!

Home Sweet Home

My husband and youngest children had spring break last week.  It really is not spring-like here although I do think I saw the blurry fuzz of pussy willows blooming in our swampy ditches as we arrived home.  What tough and brave plants to be poking their heads out into this cold light searching for spring.  I would not be a good pussy willow along with a number of other things.   We had a very relaxing inexpensive visit at friends and relatives in the St. Paul/Minneapolis MN area and a chance to see two new condos and two new grand nephews– both were very impressive.   It is always good to get some distance from your life and the tedious operations that sometimes fill it up.  I must have been quite refreshed by this excursion because within minutes of returning home, I cleaned out our frig of abandoned leftovers and stray coffee grounds, changed kitty litter, did dishes, put away suitcases, sorted mail, and picked up my studio.  Whew! That’s usually two days worth of mania right there.  I do know one of the sources for this burst of energy did come from an appreciation for being home and the other just may be the anticipation of spring and the chance to welcome two new members to our household this May.  Stay posted for some Sun in My House.

Real Sun (heat) in my House

We have been in our home of 21 years for almost two months without a main source of heat.  The kicker is that we live in Central Minnesota and am experiencing a record year for snow fall.  I love snow.  Well, I mostly love looking at it snow but really really hate being cold.  I do not function well when my shoulders become pedestals for my earrings.  I’m all about presentation but do not appreciate the sore tired shiver induced pain from trying to stay warm in my own house.  For months we have used a space heater in each bedroom and either lived in the basement where we have electric baseboard heat or in my studio with in floor radiant heat.    The decision to convert our connected double garage years ago into my studio space really became  a solid decision esp since the heat pump demise.  It has doubled as the living- homework-hangout-clothes drying and folding-dining room art making meeting place since we discovered we didn’t need to unpack our refrigerated groceries anymore.  The temperature at our kitchen island was colder than inside the frig.   Actually since I finally took down most of my Christmas decorations, this fact inspired me to create a lovely still life on my kitchen island which included ceramic chickens and real lovely brown organic eggs.  Inspiration is indeed everywhere.  Luckily a new heat pump was installed  last week and just in time.  Today is a snow day for us all.  Spring officially began March 20th but where we live  we could possibly have another snow day in July. The snow plows are finally clearing roads at 3:37pm and tomorrow we will all be back at our posts taking school finals, making up make-up work, doing play rehearsal, and bustling off to address 100 grade schoolers about how a book is made.   Today snow days and heat everywhere is sun in my house.

First Blog of Sun

This is the beginning blog of a new journey for me as a writer, artist, wife, mother, friend, and creative kook.  I look forward to sharing my love of writing and art with the tedious yet endearing moments of life.  I’ve spent almost all day playing with all sorts of options for design layouts, colors, and photos for this new creation called www.suninmyhouse.com.  With surprise the  cold winter day has turned dark and I am appreciatively warm  at the basement computer.  I’m hoping my work at this desk with a keyboard will help me balance my love of losing myself for hours in my window- filled studio.  It seems I need some right brain/left brain joggling. Good luck to me.
